Remarque: Ce post s’adresse aux lecteurs mauriciens dont certains pourraient ne pas partager mon opinion.

Je trouve déplorable la raison avancée par le gouvernement par le biais de la ministre Sheila Bappoo pour expliquer le gel du versement de la subvention annuelle à l’ACIM. Selon la ministre Sheila Bappoo, le gouvernement mauricien a pris cette décision parce que certains étudiants n’avaient pu prendre par aux examens du School Certificate à cause de l’opération escargot organisée par l’ACIM. Selon moi, si cette dernière devait s’assurer que tous les élèves puissent prendre part à leurs examens, autant ne pas organiser d’opération escargot. Croyez-vous qu’à chaque fois que la SNCF en France décide de faire la grève, elle s’assure d’abord que les étudiants français ne vont pas être pénalisés? Je ne crois pas.

Je ne suis pas insensible aux problèmes que cette opération à occasioner aux étudiants du School Certificate mais on doit admettre que l’ACIM ne se bat pas pour une catégorie de personnes uniquement. Elle se bat pour tous les consommateurs mauriciens. Qu’on le veuille ou non, nous sommes tous consommateurs d’une façon ou d’une autre. La hausse du prix du carburant contre laquelle avait protesté l’ACIM avait affecté tous les Mauriciens. Il y a toujours un prix à payer. On ne peut pas vouloir le beurre et l’argent du beurre.

Chritmas and Gift Wrapping

When it comes to gifts, I usually take the easiest route: gift bags. Gift bags require the least amount of work. All you have to do is buy a gift bag from the dollar store, put the gift inside, and you’re done. This year, however, gift bags just did not seem right. They just did not seem beautiful enough under the Christmas tree, and most of all, they just did not seem beautiful and thoughtful enough for my daughter. This year, I bought some gift wrapping paper, sat down and wrapped the gifts for my daughter and my wife the old fashion way.

Now, that the gifts are wrapped and put under the Christmas tree, it’s time to think about tonight’s dinner. On the menu tonight: foie gras on toast with a touch of fig jam, oysters on the shell with mignonette sauce, and shrimp with a cocktail sauce (homemade mayonaisse with a touch of ketchup and cognac). I just have to decide what we will be having for dessert.

My baby girl is one year old today. Time really flies when you have a child. Sometimes I feel that she is growing too fast and want her to slow down so that I can enjoy her baby years. But, growing is a sign of a healthy baby.


Psychology

I really enjoy taking Psychology classes even if there is a lot to read each time. In fact, I’m currently enrolled in Psych 253 – Social Psychology. I think I like Psychology for two reasons. First, it really is a very interesting subject. And second, I always learn something. In Psychology 101 – Introduction to Psychology, I learned about the Gestalt principle (the whole is not equal to the sum of its parts) for the first time and that when it comes to learning, an effective strategy is to study regularly, overlearn and to actively rehearse the material. In Psych 257 – Psychopathology, I learned that we are bio-psycho-social beings where our thoughts and behaviours are influenced both biologically, psychologically and socially. In my current Psychology class, so far one of the important things I’ve learned is about persuasion.

Why?

Well, now that I am a father, there are some social problems which are very frightening to me: peer pressure to do drugs and pressure to join cults. What I’ve learned is that parents should actively talk to their kids these things. Parents should first let their kids know that people will tempt them. It’s not a question of if but a question of when. Then they should teach them how to refute the persuasive arguments used by those tempting them. This is very important for if they can successfully resist a first attempt, they will become harder for others to tempt them again.

All I can hope now is that I will do a good job. I grew up in a culture where parents don’t really talk to their kids about these things. In Mauritius, parents don’t really know how to talk to their kids about sexuality and drugs.


Baby Babble

By some standards, Angelica should have started to babble a long time ago. But, I was not worried for she understood very well what we meant when we asked her to clap her hands, to wave good-bye, or even to give her plush dog a pat. Moreover, she regularly made some grunting noise. Today, I got the proof that I was right not to worry. She started babbling non-stop this afternoon. I know I’m biased, but the babbling was more pleasant to my ears than Céline Dion singing 🙂


Overprotective? Me? No way!

If you had told me 10 months ago that I would become an overprotective father, I would have replied that you were out of your mind. I never thought I would become so overprotective, but I have. I guess one doesn’t really know what it is like to be father until one becomes one.  Is it because I have a daughter and not a son? Hard to tell, but what I can say is that Angelica has completely changed my life. Life takes on a whole new meaning after her birth. All of a sudden, it’s not about me anymore, but about her. For example, the night before my last two exams, she woke up and cried twice. The next day, I went to my exams very very tired and had a tough time concentrating, but surprisingly, I was not angry at all. I guess this is what people call father’s love, isn’t it?


Pressure Cooker TV

I was watching an episode of Pressure Cooker TV today and was surprised to see that sometimes the contestants were asked to prepare a dish to go with a particular wine. If the judges thought that the dish did not complement the wine well, they would lose points.  I was surprised because, except in the case of Champagne, dishes are usually not prepared to complement a particular wine, but rather a particular wine is chosen to complement a particular dish. Moreover, it is not the job of the Chef to recommend a particular wine, but rather that of the wine waiter. If this was not the case, why should a restaurant hire a wine waiter then?

Pour ceux d’entre vous qui ne le savent pas, je suis un plongeur certifié CMAS. Si j’étais encore à Maurice, je serais probablement devenu moniteur de plongée :-). Cette vidéo a été enregistrée à “La fosse aux requins à Maurice. Je voulais y faire une plongée au moins une fois dans ma vie mais mon épouse (petite amie à cette époque) ne voulait pas 😦

For those of you who do not know I am a CMAS certified diver. If I was still in Mauritius, I would have probably become a diving instructor 🙂 Anyway, this video was shot at “La fosse aux requins” in Mauritius. I wanted to dive there at least once in my life, but my wife (then girlfriend) did not want me too 😦


Angelica in the Jumperoo

It was Angelica’s first time in a Jumperoo. At first, she did not know what to do. But, once she got the hang of it, nothing could stop her, except when she would activate the sound and light. Her parents were very happy to see her bouncing up and down.


Niouk Yen

My wife made some Niouk Yen today. It’s only her second attempt. Her first attempt was unsuccessful, but this time she did a wonderful job. Now, whenever we have some Niouk Yen cravings, instead of dreaming about them, we can make them.
